In his own words

"After moving out west in the 90’s, I found myself spending an increasing share of my life in wilderness areas. Utah will do that to you (just please don’t tell anyone about her). I began photographing landscapes out of an instinct to capture these beautiful experiences. It helped that I had some past photographic knowledge, but landscapes were something entirely novel to me. So I studied everything on the subject I could find. I was lucky because other photographers had the generosity to share their knowledge - and because I was willing to learn from blowing once-in-a-lifetime shots. Eventually I accumulated enough experience to express my own creative voice that these images (hopefully) represent.

Photographing landscapes certainly involves technical photographic issues. But the challenges extend into issues of lifestyle, fitness, time in the field and serendipity. In due course, landscape photographers learn how to be better hikers. They learn how to manage uncomfortable environmental conditions. They learn how to resist fatigue from hiking to far flung locations at odd hours while trying to protect a backpack full of precision metal and optical glass. Above all, they learn to be patient and perceptive because much of the time on location is spent quietly listening with their eyes for the rare moments of treasured light. I am grateful for these opportunities to be separated from the static of our everyday lives. And, I am humbled at each expression of joy from those of you that have supported me over the years. For me, these nature experiences can be spiritual endeavors. Rarely do I feel closer to God. The journeys themselves become prayers. To the extent that these images can emotionally transport you to a similar place, then it is my heartfelt privilege to share them with you." - Murray
